Betty & The Moon that followed

A deeply personal story inspired by real life.

Created to gently teach, connect, and heal.

Betty & The Moon is a heartfelt children’s story inspired by my grandmother—my Gigi.

She is Nisga’a, from the Nisga’a Nation, and a survivor of Edmonton Residential School. This book was created as a gentle, loving way to share her story with my own children—helping them understand the meaning of Orange Shirt Day through connection, truth, and care.

What began as a gift for her… became something much greater.

Every character in this story is real.

Every moment is rooted in lived experience.

I grew up listening to her stories—

in the smokehouse, or tucked safely beside my grandparents—

hearing about her life in a way that always carried warmth, even through hardship.

She would sing the same song to me that the children once sang while they were in residential school.

Even now, though we live 18 hours apart, we remain deeply connected.

Each year on Orange Shirt Day, we call her as we prepare for school—watching, remembering, and honoring together.

After losing my grandfather, I wanted to give her something meaningful—

something that would hold her story gently, and carry it forward for the generations growing up behind us.

This book is the beginning of a series that follows her life:

From residential school,

to love,

to motherhood,

to guiding her children through Indian Day School,

to healing—

and the generations that come after.

More than a children’s book,

this is a story of identity, resilience, family, and love.

Told softly—so even the smallest hearts can begin to understand.

A meaningful book for families to read together,

to open conversations, and to honor stories that matter.

This is my Gigi’s story.

Told through my eyes.
